India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: Diego Godin’s 81st
minute header ensured two-time World Champions Uruguay defeated
four-time champions Italy 1-0 in their Group D game at Estádio das Dunas
in Natal on Tuesday, even as Uruguay’s star striker Luis Suarez ensured
yet another date with controversy.
The Liverpool forward, in an attempt to tackle Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, apparently bit the latter as the two competed for a free kick. The centre-back dropped to the ground, even as Suarez held his own mouth to underscore the ‘accidental agony.’

The event, however, had no impact on referee Marco Rodriguez, despite a
fuming Chiellini strutting across the ground with his shirt pulled under
his shoulder to display what he claimed were bite marks of the
Uruguayan star. Soon, Godin scored a rasping header to win it for
previous edition’s semi-finalists, but the spotlight remained well and
truly on Suarez, who could miss rest of the World Cup if proven guilty.
FIFA, it must be noted, reserves the right to take retrospective actions
should such acts are missed by on-field referees.
The match has already had its share of controversy, with a red-card to midfielder Claudio Marchisio ensuring the Azzurri were left a man short. Marchisio got marching orders in 59th minute of play for what appeared a regulation tackle with Arevalo Rios. While many believed it to be a harsh call, the 2006 champions were reduced to a ten man unit, something that Uruguay readily capitalized on.
By virtue of this win, Uruguay have booked their spot in final-16, while Italy have been knocked out from group stage.
