FIFA WC 2014: Red hot Chile beats Spain at Maracana, send defending champions out of World Cup

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar NewDelhi: Unable to come to terms with the 1-5 hammering they got against World Cup 2010 finalists Netherlands recently, defending champions Spain were humiliated by a spirited Chilean side to go down 2-0 in their Group B encounter at Estádio Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.
The defeat means Spain’s campaign in World Cup 2014 has come to an abrupt end.

The 2010 champions were blown away by a relentess Chilean attack while none of its own famed forwards could find the net in the crucial encounter.
The slide began in the twentieth minute, when Eduardo Vargas fired one in, before Charles Aranguiz netted the winner just before the interval.
Spain could not recover from the stunning attack thereafter, and played catching up for better part of the second half. Tey failed to convert their half chances, and were admirably stiled by a resolute Chilean defence.
They become the third reigning champion in recent history to exit the tournament at the group stage following France in 2002 and Italy in 2006.
