off to a rollicking stat in Sao Paulo on Thursday, with hosts Brazil
defeating 1994 second runners up Croatia 3-1. While he scoreline
suggests a comprehensive show of supremacy, the World Cup opener was in
fact closer than what meets the eye.
Brazil lacked the flair he world has come to identify with them, and were largely gingerly. Coatia excelled in midfield, but ultimately it was the Brazilian brawn- coupled with a controversial penalty- that helped Selaco get off to a winning start.

Brazil’s young sensation Neymar scored a brace on his World Cup debut,
but his maiden appearance in the quadrennial extravaganza was not bereft
of controversies. He was shown just a yellow cad in the 26th minute by
referee Yuishi Nichimura, when the 22-year old had pushed a forearm
Croatia playmaker Luka Modric’s throat.
Later, Nichimura awarded Brazil a questionable penalty that Neymar converted in the 71st minute. The penalty was awarded because Fred was apparently fouled by Dejan Lovren inside the box. The replays, however, showed the Brazilian had clearly dived after Lovren all but laid his hands on him. Not being punished enough by conceding a penalty from it, the Southampton defender was also shown a yellow cad.
Neymar converted the penalty and Oscar made it 3-1 later as Brazil earned their first points, but the game will be remembered as much for Neymar’s hits as for Nichimura’s misses.
