Delhi: A formidable German side completed a clinical 4-0 humiliation of
Portugal in the opening match of Group G, even as the Cup’s twentieth
edition witnessed its first hattrick- and headbutt- at Arena Fonte Nova
in Salvador on Monday.

Germans, known to be strong starters in World Cups, didn’t let their
reputation suffer as Thomas Muller stole the thunder from what was
billed as Cristiano Ronaldo’s big game. Muller, 24, opened the
floodgates for Germany in the twelfth minute with a penalty strike.
Twenty minutes later, Matts Hummels put Germany 2-0 ahead.
The drama, however, began in the 37th minute when Pepe’s tackle had Muller on the mat. Even as Muller sat on the ground bewildered, Pepe returned to offer the 24-year old a headbutt on latter’s head. Muller, of course did his bit by protesting vociferously even as Pepe was red-carded. To rub it in, Muller scored minutes later to make it 3-0 and found the net again in 78th minute to complete a memorable hattrick and a crushing 4-0 win over Portugal.
The Portugal appeared jaded and paid the price for some reckless decisions on the field, much to the delight for Germans.
