The game witnessed a moment of madness from Portugal defender Pepe, who headbutted German midfielder Thomas Muller. Muller, winner of Golden Boot in World Cu 2010, had his revenge in a most spectacular fashion, netting home a memorable hattrick to ensure a thumping victory for last edition’s semi-finalists.

Among the teeming legions of fans present at Arena Fonte Nova was a certain Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany. Post match, she also paid a visit to the German locker room, and obliged forward Lukas Podolski with a selfie.
The match was billed as a potential big game for star striker Cristiano Ronaldo, but the Portugese, much like his colleagues, could only flatter to deceive. At the end of the game, he cut a sorry figure, much to the dismay of his millions of fan worldwide.
