Now Suarez BITES the bullet, says SORRY to Chiellini for biting him!

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar Uruguay's star striker Luis Suarez has apologised to Italy's Giorgio Chiellini for the bite that caused a stir in the world of football.
Suarez, who got slapped with a nine-match and four-month ban from football, for the first time admitted that he bit the Italian player, shifting from his previous statement that he lost his balance and did not bite on purpose.
The Liverpool forward said in a statement published on his Twitter account, "The truth is that my colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the collision he suffered with me."
Suarez added, ''After several days of being home with my family, I have had the opportunity to regain my calm and reflect on what occurred during the Italy-Uruguay match on 24 June.”
It is his third career ban for biting after incidents with Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic while at Liverpool in April 2013, and PSV's Otman Bakkal while at Ajax in 2010.

FIFA WC 2014: Germany knock out Algeria with extra time strikes, reaches quarterfinal

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar It took goals in extra time for Germany to confirm the quarterfinal berth in the FIFA World Cup, as the 90 minutes were clearly not enough to decide a winner.
The full time saw Germany and Algeria frustratingly attempting and then failing to score a goal against each other. But just 2 minutes into the extra time, André Schürrle gave Germans the lead, cleverly turning in a pass from Thomas Mueller.
Mesut Ozil then scored an insurance goal, widening the gap for Algeria in a fabulous fashion.
Right before the end of extra time Algeria's Abdelmoumene Djabou did manage a consulation goal, as it was too little too late.
Germany ousted the last African team in the World Cup, Algeria, with a 2-1 win in the Round of 16 clash.
With this win, Germany have fixed a date with the French in quarterfinal of the World Cup, scheduled on July 4th.

Last gasp goals save Netherlands from World Cup knock-out against Mexico

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar In one of the most dramatic matches of this World Cup, Netherlands scored in dying minutes of the game against Mexico to keep their campaign alive and proceed to the quarterfinal.
Netherlands were lagging for most part of the game, and were going down to Mexico 1-0, but a late charge ensured the Dutch sealed an unexpected 2-1 come from behind win.
The first half went goalless, but three minutes into the second half of the game Giovani Dos Santos gave Mexico the lead as the Villarreal striker thumped one in the bottom corner.
After that the Dutch were kept at bay, thanks to excellent efforts by Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa who saved 5 on target shots.
The Mexican could sniff a win as they came close to the final whistle, but in the 88th minute Wesley Sneijder stoke life into the game scoring an equaliser.
And in the injury time the Mexican called for doom, conceding a penalty to Netherlands. Klaas Jan Huntelaar made no mistake in hurling one into the bottom left corner, sealing a thriller and powering Nethrlands to the quarterfinal.

PREVIEW: Can tournament favourites Germany beat Algeria in the World Cup pre-quarterfinals?

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar Do not make the mistake of taking the between match Germany and Algeria as a David vs Goliath encounter, certainly the Germans are one of the favourites to lift the World Cup, but Algeria too are no pushovers. The side has taken many by surprise, making the cut for the round of 16 of the mega tournament. Algeria have the potential to cause an upset at this stage.
HEAD TO HEAD
Germany may be the frontrunners for the coveted cup, but they will be wary of their pre-quarterfinal rivals, as Algeria have a 100% win record against them, winning the two matches they have played. Algeria have struck 4 goals, meanwhile Germany has managed a solitary goal in past head to head clashes.
TEAM NEWS
Germany: Joachim Löw has almost a full squad at his disposal, barring Lukas Podolski whi is out with a thigh injury, other than that the Germany coach is expected to field his strongest line-up.Bastian Schweinsteiger will likely keep his place ahead of Sami Khedira.
Algeria: Captain Madjid Bougherra should return to the side after being rested in the last game to avoid a suspension, Belkalem may lose his place due to this.
PLAYER TO WATCH OUT FOR
Last World Cup’s Golden Boot winner Germany’s Thomas Mueller is again the one of the top contender this time as well. Having scored 4 goals already, Mueller stands one goal behind Colombia’s James Rodriguez. Mueller will be all fired up to make it a double delight by scoring to lead his team to a crucial win and leading the Golden Boot tally.
Another player to watch out for is Algeria’s forward Islam Slimani. The 26-year-old has impressed everyone with his play on set pieces so far in the World Cup.
Match starts 1.30am IST

FIFA WC Preview: South American sizzler tonight as Brazil takes on Chile in first pre-quarters

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: Head to head records can be grossly misleading, especially in crunch, high-pressure games. It is solely for this reason that reading too much into Brazil’s outstanding record against Chile can lead to eventual embarrassment. The two sides have faced each other 68 times, with Chile losing 48 of those encounters. They have defeated the world number three side on seven occasions- not once in their three World Cup engagements- and have drawn 13 times. All that, however, will amount to naught as Brazil- buoyed and burdened by home support- and Chile- confident after ousting the reigning world champions- will meet exactly four years to the day since their last meeting in South Africa. That was again a Round 2 clash, and Brazil had eased to a 3-0 win.

However, midfielder Willian insists that Brazilian fans should not automatically expect a repeat performance.

"Football nowadays has changed so much. Of course Brazil have beaten Chile a few times before, which is good. But we must not think about this. Every game has its own story. I am sure that Chile will be motivated and confident too," said the Chelsea player.

Brazil have yet to live up to the high expectations surrounding them at these finals despite collecting seven points from a possible nine in the group stage.

In contrast, Chile have impressed, notably in sending the holders Spain packing from the competition with a 2-0 win at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

Only a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in their final Group B match condemned them to second place and another meeting with Brazil.

However, Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has admitted he would have chosen different opponents for his side than Chile, who drew 2-2 at the Mineirao in a friendly in April last year and narrowly lost 2-1 when the teams clashed in Canada last November.

Striker Fred, who scored his first goal of the tournament in Brazil's 4-1 win against Cameroon, believes it will be an open encounter against a Chile side who operate with a three-man defence and look to the class of Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal going forward.

"Chile are tactically very strong and play with great commitment. And going forward they have players who can make the difference," said the 30-year-old.

"We have seen some of their games. The way the tournament has been I think they will look to attack and Brazil will do the same."

Chile have not reached the quarter-finals since they hosted the tournament in 1962, when they were eventually eliminated in the last four by Brazil.

However, the current side, coached by Argentine Jorge Sampaoli, are confident they can capitalise on the enormous weight of pressure on Brazil and upset the odds.

"If I thought we were going to lose, I would go back to my room, collect my things and go home," said Sanchez, who will come up against his Barcelona club colleagues Daniel Alves and Neymar.

"We have respect for them, but I think we are going to beat them. We came to this World Cup to make history. We beat the world champions, and although we had a slip-up against Holland, we are going out to try and win the Cup.

"These games are to be enjoyed. We are confident and at the same time we know what we have to do to beat a team containing some of the best players in the world."

FIFA WC 2014: Despite flopping in World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo achieves special milestone!

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: If the ongoing 20th edition of FIFA World Cup in Brazil is already being talked about for Messi’s masterclass, Neymar’s expertise and Mueller’s magic, the discussions about Portugal’s star forward Cristiano Ronaldo’s flop show are also getting increasingly intense. With Portugal bowing out in Group stages, such talks are destined to gain more traction, more so when his celebrated rival Lionel Messi has scored in each of the match he has played so far in Brazil.
Ronaldo, who had a fantastic year in La Liga and Champions League, could score just once in FIFA World Cup 2014. His solitary goal came against Ghana after he had missed the target atleast thrice in the same game. The goal, however, was enough to ensure the Real Madrid striker a unique milestone. It was Ronaldo’s 50th international goal (more than Messi, Neymar, Mueller and Rooney), and he became only the eighth current footballer to score 50 or more goals.

India-Pakistan cricket to resume? Arch-rivals agree to play six bilateral series in eight years

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: On the day BCCI’s President-in-exile took over as International Cricket Council’s (ICC) first Chairman, India and Pakistan have reportedly agreed to play six bilateral series between 2015 to 2023.
Four of the six series will be hosted by Pakistan or Abu Dhabi, and all the six intended encounters have been made a part of ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP).
The renewed cricketing engagement between two hostile neighbours is increasingly being seen as ICC’s ‘reward’ to PCB, which didn’t oppose Srinivasan’s ascent to the top of game’s global governing body.
“After N. Srinivasan’s election as the first ICC chairman in a landslide, India has officially turned the MoUs (memorandum of understanding) signed earlier this year with regard to six rubbers between the two nations into binding agreements straightaway,” PCB said in a statement on Thursday.
“Four of these series will be hosted by the PCB in the United Arab Emirates or Pakistan with mutual consent. The six tours are now part of the Future Tours Programme and are to be played from 2015 to 2023,” it added.
India and Pakistan have not played a full Test series in about eight years, although they played a hurriedly arranged limited-overs series in 2013.
The PCB had initially opposed overreaching constitutional changes and a new financial model initiated by the BCCI and duly backed by Big Three, viz India, Australia and England. However, it later offered ‘conditional’ support in lieu of some concessions.

FIFA WC 2014: Algeria hold Russia to 1-1 draw, move to final-16 for the first time

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: Algeria came from one goal down to create history in the last match of group stages by qualifying for the knock-out stages of the World Cup for the first time ever. By drawing Russia 1-1, the Algerians also ensured that for the first time in World Cup’s history, two African nations go past the group stages- Nigeria being the other side. The draw means Algeria finish Group H on second position, behind Belgium, and will take on a strong German side in pre-quarters.
Russia needed win to secure their place in the last 16, and Fabio Capello’s men made the perfect start and took the lead in just six minutes. Oleg Shatov played a ball into the box from deep on the left-hand-side, which was expertly headed into the top corner by Alexander Kokorin.
However, that turned out to be the only occasion when Russians could get anything past the Algerian keeper. Raïs M'Bohli saved atleast three potential goals to keep Algeria in hunt, who needed a draw to go past Russia.
The breakthrough came in the 60th minute when Akinfeev flapped at Yacine Brahimi’s delivery from the left, allowing Slimani to head home the equaliser. It turned out to be the winner as by levelling scores, Algeria ensured an early exit for the 2018 hosts, even as Capello, the richest manager of the World Cup, was left fuming at the referees after the match.

FIFA WC 2014: Germany beat USA 1-0, both teams qualify for pre-quarters

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: Germany’s serial goal scorer Thomas Mueller came good in the 55th minute to take his all World Cups goal tally to 9 in as many games as Germany handed USA a 1-0 defeat on the last day of Group stages games on Thursday. The result, however, has no bearing on US’ chances in the World Cup, as it too has qualified in last-16.
The game witnessed alternate waves of attacks from both sides, with none relenting. Though a draw would have ensured a final-16 berth for both sides, neither Clint Dempsey and Company nor Thomas Mueller and his band looked keen to stay goalless. While German goalie Manuel Neuer went almost untested in the entire game- he was shaken from his induced monotony only in extra time, but German defence ensured he didn’t concede- US’ Tim Howard also had a great game, despite the Mueller goal.
There were some anxious moments in the US dugout though, as the news came in that Ghana had scored an equaliser in the other Group G game against Portugal. However, the US succeeded in keeping down their goal deficit in the game to just one, even as Cristiano Ronaldo pumped in the winner in the other game to ensure both US and Germany qualify in final 16.

FIFA WC 2014: Off target Portugal bow out of World Cup despite beating Ghana 2-1

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: Cristiano Ronaldo wasted a succession of glorious chances as Portugal bowed out of the World Cup despite beating Ghana 2-1 in Brasilia.
Portugal knew only a win combined with a defeat for Germany or the United States in the other Group G fixture, plus a significant swing in goal difference, would take them through to the last 16.
Germany won the group by beating the US, who also qualified on goal difference over Portugal.
Although Ronaldo netted his first goal of the tournament, the winner, it was his numerous misses that cost Portugal the sizeable victory they needed to make up for the 4-0 mauling they suffered by Germany in their first game.
Portugal had taken the lead through a John Boye own goal before Asamoah Gyan equalised.
The Europeans broke the deadlock after half an hour with an own goal by the unfortunate Boye, who diverted a cross by Miguel Veloso off his knee and over despairing goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda.
The move that led to the goal started when the ball hit the referee in the middle of a promising-looking attack by Ghana, missing two of their star players after bust-ups with management.
Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari had been sent home after attacking and abusing, respectively, members of the Ghana management.
Ronaldo, who last month helped Real Madrid to a 10th Champions League title, had already come close to scoring on a number of occasions before the first goal.

Dark days ahead for world cricket, warns Mr. IPL Lalit Modi as N Srinivasan takes charge as ICC’s first Chairman

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: Former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi has reacted sharply to the ascent of his bitter rival N Srinivasan as first Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), and has predicted “dark days” for world cricket.
Srinivasan, who also co-owns IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and has been accused of conflict of interest in the cash-rich league, assumed office in Melbourne on Thursday.
"It is truly a sad day in world cricket as N Srinivasan takes over as the Chairman of the ICC today," Modi said in a statement.
"N Srinivasan, despite being removed by Supreme Court as BCCI President, has been formally appointed the first Chairman of the ICC after its 52-member council approved a controversial revamp of the body's administrative structure, which in itself is a harbinger of the dark days ahead for world cricket," he after said after Srinivasan's appointment.
Further, Modi, whose own re-election as the president of Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) created enough controversy not long back with BCCI suspending the state body soon after his win, sounded appalled to see Srinivasan's elevation despite allegations floating against the BCCI president in exile.
"Consider this - N Srinivasan has been elected the Chairman despite being removed by the Supreme Court of India from the position of BCCI President due to ongoing investigations into the match-fixing allegations relating to the 2013 edition of the IPL.
"India's FBI, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), is pursuing allegations of fraud committed by Srinivasan as managing director of India Cements, which is alleged to have routed scarce water resources with corrupt state officials to double production and profits.
"Supreme Court Justice AK Patnaik for the first time revealed details about the sealed envelope recently at the case hearing. He said that there were 13 names in the sealed envelope concerning match fixing and spot fixing, Srinivasan's name was the 13th, and he had 12 allegations against him, with annexure to each of them. It seems that Mr Srinivasan has not taken the allegations seriously," Modi added.

On This Day: World at our feet!

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: Thirty-one years is a long time, especially in a nation’s sporting history. However, when it comes to India’s cricket history, June 25 will have an instant recall value, for it was on this very day 31 summers ago that a bunch of rag-tag cricketers shook the world and our consciousness forever. On a dour day in London, India, led by the inimitable Kapil Dev, stopped the all-conquering West Indian juggernaut to change the course of world’s cricketing history forever.
Batting first, India were sent packing for a mere 183; presumably a cakewalk for a side boasting of Sir Vivian Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes and Clive Lloyd. In reply, disciplined bowling and watertight fielding ensured Kapil’s Devils stopped the mighty Caribbeans in their tracks. India won the finals by 43 runs, and a cricket revolution back home ensured it became a collective national passion.

FIFA WC 2014: Watch how Uruguay's Suarez ‘bit’ Italy 1-0 to advance to last 16

NEI India Film Editing Via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: Diego Godin’s 81st minute header ensured two-time World Champions Uruguay defeated four-time champions Italy 1-0 in their Group D game at Estádio das Dunas in Natal on Tuesday, even as Uruguay’s star striker Luis Suarez ensured yet another date with controversy.
The Liverpool forward, in an attempt to tackle Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, apparently bit the latter as the two competed for a free kick. The centre-back dropped to the ground, even as Suarez held his own mouth to underscore the ‘accidental agony.’
The event, however, had no impact on referee Marco Rodriguez, despite a fuming Chiellini strutting across the ground with his shirt pulled under his shoulder to display what he claimed were bite marks of the Uruguayan star. Soon, Godin scored a rasping header to win it for previous edition’s semi-finalists, but the spotlight remained well and truly on Suarez, who could miss rest of the World Cup if proven guilty. FIFA, it must be noted, reserves the right to take retrospective actions should such acts are missed by on-field referees.
The match has already had its share of controversy, with a red-card to midfielder Claudio Marchisio ensuring the Azzurri were left a man short. Marchisio got marching orders in 59th minute of play for what appeared a regulation tackle with Arevalo Rios. While many believed it to be a harsh call, the 2006 champions were reduced to a ten man unit, something that Uruguay readily capitalized on.
By virtue of this win, Uruguay have booked their spot in final-16, while Italy have been knocked out from group stage.
