Super Kings v Kings XI, qualifier 2, IPL, Mumbai

CSK seek their sixth final, Kings XI their first

Match facts
Friday, May 30, 2014
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big Picture
Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab have contrasting IPL histories. While Super Kings have made it past the group stage in all seven seasons - and five finals - Kings XI are yet to make a final. Their best showing was reaching the semis in 2008. The difference is stark though Kings XI, with their revamped squad, look formidable.
Kings XI was the one team Super Kings failed to outclass in both attempts in the league stages. They have one more chance to rectify that - in the second playoff. Super Kings' weak link - the bowling - was highlighted in both games as Kings XI posted 200-plus scores. The teams had contrasting fortunes on Wednesday, with Super Kings riding on momentum after brushing aside Mumbai Indians comfortably.
Super Kings could have been chasing in excess of 190, had it not been for the control shown by their bowlers, stifling the batsmen with variations in pace, and careless batting by Mumbai towards the end of their innings. MS Dhoni blamed poor catching as one of the reasons for their sudden three-match blip ahead of the playoffs. They had managed to set that right in their last two games and approach their second knockout game feeling more positive. Batting was never going to be Super Kings' worry. If their bowling can hold it together, Super Kings are likely to be in their sixth final in seven seasons.
Having exhausted a lifeline, Kings XI have their second shot at the final. A listless performance with the bat against Kolkata Knight Riders might have indicated they were running out of steam, but if they weren't compelled to keep an eye on Duckworth-Lewis, the script could have been different. The batsmen were flustered by the threat of a washout and the need to keep up with the par score and yet preserve wickets, but with every passing over, Knight Riders' superior bowling pinned them down. Consistency has been the hallmark of Kings XI's campaign and they have not lost two games in a row. Having come this far, they cannot afford another bad day for it will thwart their first final appearance.

League meetings
In the first meeting, in Abu Dhabi, sixties by Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum powered Super Kings to 205 but the target was cut down to size in spectacular fashion by Kings XI's Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell's switch hits and reverse sweeps stunned Super Kings as he smashed 95 off 43 balls, David Miller made a clinical 54 as Kings XI coasted with an over to spare. It wasn't the last Super Kings saw of Maxwell.
In Cuttack, a "home" game for Kings XI, Maxwell carried on from where he finished, pounding 90 off 38 balls to lift Kings XI to the season highest 231. Super Kings never threatened the target but still managed 187.
Watch out for...
Sixty-four runs off 24 balls at a strike-rate of 266.67 - that's Maxwell v Ashwin in IPL 2014. R Ashwin is yet to dismiss him and as those figures suggest, it has been one-way traffic. Ashwin has compulsively bowled round the wicket to the right-handers and bowling on the pads to create an awkward angle but Maxwell so far has made a mockery of it. But after Super Kings' win over Mumbai on Wednesday, Ashwin had a message for Maxwell on camera. Though the interview had finished, Ashwin alerted the interviewer for a postscript. He said he would bowl over the wicket to Maxwell, as if throwing open a challenge.
Parvinder Awana has had a stop-start IPL campaign and in his five games, has taken a wicket in each except the first qualifier. However, Kings XI's Sandeep Sharma is still among the top five wicket-takers for the season but has been benched in the last few games. With the game in Mumbai, swing could be a factor. Mumbai Indians' Praveen Kumar troubled Dwayne Smith at the Wankhede earlier this month with his swing. That could encourage Sandeep's inclusion, for he is a bowler in the Praveen mould.
Stats and trivia
  • Kings XI and Super Kings have the most successful bowling attacks in this IPL (in terms of wickets taken). Super Kings have taken 85 wickets while Kings XI's have taken 93 wickets. All other teams have taken less than 80 wickets
  • Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith have scored 513 runs while batting together in 12 innings in this IPL (average 42.75) - more than any other pair. David Miller and Glenn Maxwell have only batted together in half the number of innings (6), but have scored 385 runs (average 64.16) - the third highest for any pair.
Quotes
"We have handled pressure well in the last seven years of the IPL. When you have a skipper like MS Dhoni at the helm and Stephen Fleming as your coach, we learn to handle pressure well."
Super Kings batsman Suresh Raina hopes his team can continue to do so in the remaining games
"We did not bat the way we're capable of and not many of our batsman got a score of 40, I think that led to our downfall."
Kings XI coach Sanjay Bangar on what went wrong against Knight Riders

IPL 7: King Khan meets Didi after KKR make it a 'knight' to remember!

NEI INDIA Film Editing via Daily.Bhaskar Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) entered its second IPL final in three years after beating table toppers Kings XI Punjab by 28 runs here on Wednesday. While the result means Kings, after enjoying a dream run this IPL, face a real danger of elimination, it also underlines the incredible grit of KKR that culminated in an astonishing eight-match winning spree.
Winning the toss and putting KKR in, Kings reduced Gambhir’s men to a gettable 163 in the allotted 20 overs. However, thanks to some inspired pace bowling from Umesh Kumar, the Knights bundled out Kings for a mere 135.
Post win, Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, who co-owns KKR, paid a visit to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Khan, who is known to share good rapport with Banerjee, visited her Harish Chatterjee street residence where a large number of his fans gathered to catch a glimpse of him.
Mamata Banerjee came out from her residence to welcome King Khan, who in turn touched her feet in a show of respect.

Suresh Raina to turn to MSD, Fleming for captaincy tips

NEI INDIA Film Editing via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: India’s middle order batsman Suresh Raina will look no further than his Chennai Super Kings skipper and coach to take a few quick leadership tips before he leads a second string Indian team in three ODIs in Bangladesh starting June 15.
The southpaw, whose useful contributions have resulted in yet another playoff finish for CSK, will have a brief break before he dons Indian colours.
“I am focusing now on the next two games of (IPL) and then I will have 10-12 days on how to plan things. I hope I will sit with MSD and Fleming on how to plan,” he said.
“It will be a good opportunity for me before the England ODI series. I hope if I do well (in Bangladesh) then I will go and perform well in the England one-day series also,” he added.
He, however, admitted that Bangladesh series would not be easy for his “young team”, as the hosts would be tough opponents in their backyard.
The 27-year old will lead the Indian team which is devoid of star players like regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma among others.
“Bangladesh is a good team in its home ground. We didn’t win in the Asia Cup and we lost the (T20) World Cup final (held there). It will be a challenge for us.
“It is a young team. The good thing is that all the young players have done well. Left-arm (spinner) Akshar Patel has done well, (Ambati) Rayudu has done well, Manoj Tiwary has done well, (Wriddhiman) Saha has done well. Especially Robin Uthappa, he has been performing well in the ongoing IPL,” said Raina on Wednesday night after his IPL team Chennai Super Kings posted a seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians.

Knight Riders through to final after Kings XI unravel

NEI India Via ESPN Cricinfo
Kolkata Knight Riders 163 for 8 (Uthappa 42, Karanveer 3-40) beat Kings XI Punjab 135 for 8 (Saha 35, Umesh 3-13) by 28 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Kolkata Knight Riders eased into the IPL final with their eighth-successive win, beating a listless Kings XI Punjab at Eden Gardens. Robin Uthappa prolonged a stellar season and took the record for the most runs scored by an Indian batsman in an IPL season. Gautam Gambhir, though scratchy with the bat, had helmed an impressive turnaround by Kolkata Knight Riders. The satisfaction of making the final was sweetened all the more when both players returned into national reckoning. Uthappa found a place for the ODI tour of Bangladesh and Gambhir could contemplate a Test comeback in England.
Rain tends to favour chasing teams, if it's impact is expected. On Wednesday, sunny skies welcomed Kings XI and Knight Riders but as the evening waned, the weather soured. Kings XI would not have been flustered by a target of 164, but the advent of a non-stop drizzle in the third over meant they had to tackle one of the wilier bowling attacks with the prospect of the match being curtailed at any given moment. Having fallen behind the Duckworth-Lewis equation, one of the most assured batting line-ups suddenly looked out of their depth, but they have another crack on Friday when they meet the winner of the eliminator.
The jitters began when Manan Vohra, empowered by a few solid hits, miscued to long-on. His 26 off 19 had originally put Kings XI ahead on the rain rule but now they were four runs behind par. Glenn Maxwell's attempts to dance around the crease to upset the bowler's rhythm backfired when he was found plumb in front. Kings XI were 11 behind and the downward spiral steepened.
Umesh Yadav was not among those bound for England in July. His chosen way to vent was an opening spell of 2 for 12 in three overs. As rain persisted, the batsmen were uncertain regarding the length of the match and the approach they should employ. If they took undue risks and the game ended up lasting the 20 overs, they could end up without enough batsmen. If they didn't press on, Knight Riders would clinch the game with ease.
Wriddhiman Saha and David Miller flailed at the crease, attempting to hit on the up and hack across the line, and by the time their struggle came to an end their side was more than 20 runs behind the Duckworth-Lewis equation.
With the umpires doing their best to ensure a full game - at one point they waved the invading groundsmen off the field to ensure five overs of the chase were completed - the Knight Riders spinners continued the strangle. Shakib Al Hasan and Piyush Chawla grabbed a wicket each, while conceding only 11 runs in three overs, as Kings XI meandered to 97 for 6 in after 16 overs. George Bailey attempted a counterattack, but Sunil Narine kept the penultimate over to four runs to all but seal the result.
Spin had played a prominent part in the first innings as well. Akshar Patel snared the in-form Robin Uthappa and a struggling Manish Pandey in the same over. Karanveer Singh furthered his stocks with three wickets. However, in between their strikes Knight Riders had benefited from important cameos to secure a formidable total.
Uthappa was at his fluent best again, depositing Mitchell Johnson and Parvinder Awana into the crowd with authoritative pulls. Having showcased his skills off the back foot, he drilled some eye-catching drives both through and over the off side field to fuel his 10th 40-plus score on the trot. His exit however seemed to drain Knight Riders' momentum until Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hasan contributed 41 off 33 balls in the push towards the death overs.
Both batsmen fell just before a 20-minute break for rain, but Chawla, Suryakumar Yadav and Ryan ten Doeschate managed 49 runs in the final four overs to provide more than enough cushion for their bowling attack.

Efficient CSK enter another qualifier

NEI India Via ESPN Cricinfo
Chennai Super Kings 176 for 3 (Raina 54*, D Hussey 40*, Harbhajan 2-27) beat Mumbai Indians 173 for 8 (Simmons 67, Mohit 3-42) by 7 wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

After a few off games, Chennai Super Kings held on to all their catches, after which Mumbai Indians fumbled in the field to clear the qualifier passage for the most consistent team in the IPL history. The game was won and lost in the final few overs of Mumbai's innings when they went from 140 for 2 in 16 overs to 173 for 8 in 20. Lendl Simmons' half-century had set them up beautifully, but Mumbai's batsmen fell one after the other as Super Kings bowlers remained accurate and stifled them with changes of pace. An edgy but quick start to the chase was driven home by Suresh Raina, who earlier in the day made his India comeback as the ODI captain.
Mumbai wouldn't have excepted such a facile defeat after a rollicking start provided by former Super Kings opener Michael Hussey and Simmons. They added 76 in 9.4 overs, finding gaps regularly and using the quick outfield and the slope of the Brabourne Stadium. A big, fighting total looked on the cards when Corey Anderson raced away to 20 off 10. R Ashwin, who had bowled well without success until then, drew a top edge to send Anderson back with the first ball of the 13th over.
A platform had been set nonetheless, and Super Kings were still looking at a stiff target. And Mumbai seemed well on their way, with 41 runs off the next 23 balls, but like he had done earlier, Ravindra Jadeja provided another breakthrough with Simmons' wicket. The ball had been turning, but this one didn't, and the Super Kings spinners did their job with just 57 runs in their eight overs. Their contribution was crucial because Brendon McCullum's comeback had meant Super Kings had no overseas bowlers.
Mohit Sharma and Ashish Nehra ended well as Mumbai kept mis-hitting the big ones and kept finding the deep fielders. Quite opposite was the start of the Super Kings innings. Praveen Kumar looked more incisive than any of the Super Kings quicks, but he was denied by Umpire Bruce Oxenford, who let Dwayne Smith get away with possibly the plumbest lbw of the IPL season. Oxenford suggested the ball was going down; it was Mumbai that were going down after this decision. Corey Anderson suffered at the hand of his fielders, when Harbhajan Singh and Ambati Rayudu converged to attempt Faf du Plessis' catch, with neither going for it.
Harbhajan did manage to pull things back, though, with slow loopy offbreaks to take out both the openers after they had raced to 60 in the first six overs. With the ball turning and gripping, it seemed we could have a tight chase, a feeling reinforced by McCullum getting stumped to make it 87 for 3 with 10.3 overs to go. Raina, though, went on to display some of his vintage IPL form, in the company of David Hussey.
There never seemed any panic around. His six over extra cover, off the bowling of Harbhajan, was the turning point in this innings. Even though D Hussey struggled to get going at the start, Raina kept the asking rate in check with well-placed shots that weren't necessary boundaries. As Super Kings took the game further without the asking rate getting out of hand, Mumbai kept getting pushed out with no death bowler in their ranks.
Raina, who has played every Super Kings match in the history of the IPL, soon matched the record for most scores of 50 or more in the event, 23, by which time D Hussey had also got into the act and all but ended the game.

Zaheer out, Gambhir in for England Tests

Agarkar: Can't see reason for Aaron over Umesh

India Test squad for England

  • MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishwar Pandey, Ishant Sharma, Stuart Binny, Varun Aaron, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Pankaj Singh
  • In: Gautam Gambhir, Stuart Binny, Varun Aaron, Pankaj Singh
  • Out: Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Ambati Rayudu

Zaheer Khan has failed to find a place in an unusually large squad for the five Tests against England starting July. Other major talking points in the 18-man squad were the return of Gautam Gambhir, who last played Tests for India in December 2012, and the inclusion of Rajasthan's pace bowler Pankaj Singh. The touring party included the top seven that went to New Zealand, retained the two spinners, featured six quicks and one seaming allrounder, to go with Gambhir and reserve wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.

Poll

What is the most surprising choice in India's Test squad for England?
See results »
The biggest talking point was the exclusion of Zaheer. A series of injury problems had raised questions over the 35-year-old Zaheer's ability to last a Test series and though he dispelled those worries by bowling 107 overs in the two Tests against New Zealand earlier this year, a back injury forced him to miss almost the entire India leg of the IPL. It is still unclear whether Zaheer has missed out due to the injury, or whether he has been dropped.
The last time India went to England, in 2011, Zaheer broke down in the second session of the first Test, never to recover. That was the beginning of India's dramatic slide in overseas Tests.
Gambhir, another casualty of that England tour, returned to the Test squad after a year and a half despite a middling first-class season as the squad is short on experience: only two other members in the squad, MS Dhoni and Ishant Sharma, have played Tests in England. There were no other outstanding contenders for the back-up openers' slot.
Pankaj has been rewarded for several successful seasons on the domestic circuit, including 39 wickets at 22.46 in the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy. He had also been integral to Rajasthan's run to successive Ranji titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12, and has made several impassioned pleas questioning his absence from the national squad. If Pankaj gets to play a Test, he will become the India bowler with most first-class wickets before Test debut, 300, beating R Vinay Kumar's 241.
The six quicks were joined by allrounder Stuart Binny. The only back-up batsman in the squad was Gambhir, with Saha on hand as second-choice wicketkeeper.
India have not played a five-Test series in more than a decade, the last was against West Indies in 2002. India have not won a Test abroad in three years, and have lost away series to South Africa and New Zealand in the past six months, causing them to slide to No. 5 in the ranking.

IPL 7: Kolkata Knight Riders book final’s berth after destroying Kings of Punjab

NEI INDIA via Daily.Bhaskar The Kolkata Knight Riders led by Gautam Gambhir have marched to the final of the seventh edition of Indian Premier League as the team thrashed Kings Eleven Punjab by 28 runs in the first qualifier.
The Kings of Punjab started off well when they began to chase a modest target of 163 runs but soon things took a U-turn and the men of Gambhir made a fabulous come-back in the match.
The match played between the top two teams of the tournament was marked and halted by rain at some instance but was resumed almost quickly.
Batting first, Kolkata gave an early breakthrough to the opponents in the name of Gambhir who could only score one run. Flamboyant Robin Uthappa continued to play in his electrifying form and his quick fire 42 runs helped his team to get to a decent score.
The score of 163 runs seemed to be small in front of Punjab, that has chased a 200+ score twice this tournament but the riders hold on to the hope and played courageously to clinch the match.
The eliminator match between Chennai and Mumbai is going on, on the other hand. Though Punjab has lost today’s match but it still has got a chance to get a birth in the final. Punjab will be playing against the winner of match between Chennai and Mumbai and that match will give IPL 7 its second finalist.

First IPL qualifier postponed due to rain

The first qualifier at Eden Gardens was postponed after torrential rain, Kolkata Knight Riders v Kings XI Punjab, IPL 2014, Qualifier 1, Kolkata, May 27, 2014

The Kolkata Knight Riders v Kings XI Punjab IPL qualifier at Eden Gardens has been postponed to Wednesday due to torrential rain in Kolkata. The match will be played at 4 pm, while the eliminator in Mumbai, between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, will be played at 8 pm as scheduled.
If the weather or ground conditions do not permit a full game in Kolkata on Wednesday as well, overs will be reduced till it is a five-over-a-side affair. If even that is not possible, as per the playing conditions, the winner will be decided via a Super Over. The latest the Super Over can begin is 9.10 pm.
If that, too, is ruled out, then the side which finished the league stage with more wins - that is, Kings XI - will go through to the final. Thundershowers "in spots" are forecast for Kolkata for Wednesday.
The ground had been fully under covers and the outfield was under ankle-deep water in places due to torrential rain lashing the city, PTI reported. At 5.15 pm, umpires Nigel Llong and S Ravi inspected the ground with curator Prabir Mukherjee and decided that it was impossible for it to be made match-fit in time for even a five-overs-a-side game today, prompting the early postponement.
"Ticket-holders who purchased tickets for the original match day will be able to enter the stadium on Wednesday on presentation of their original ticket (with the bar code intact) at the turnstiles. Gates will open at 2.00 pm," PTI quoted the IPL's media advisory as saying. "Refunds will only be made to ticket purchasers if the match is cancelled without a ball being bowled."

Another feather for Virat Kohli, voted the fittest cricketer in IPL

NEI INDIA via Daily.Bhaskar New Delhi: India’s middle-order mainstay Virat Kohli has added another laurel to his overcrowded cap. The 25-yaee old has been voted the fittest cricketer in the ongoing seventh edition of Indian Premier League- beating the likes of Chris Gayle and Ms Dhoni by a distance.
According to a poll conducted by thehealthsite.com, a majority of readers chose the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper as the fittest player this summer. Kohli got 42 per cent of the votes while Gayle and Dhoni were joint second - getting 13% of the total votes.
While Bangalore may not have made much of an impact on the cricket field - failing to make it to the playoffs, captain Kohli continues to be rated highly by cricket fans.
It was revealed earlier this month that Kohli was the most searched IPL cricketer on Google. He once again beat the likes of Dhoni, Bangalore teammates Gayle and Yuvraj Singh and Kings XI Punjab power-hitter Glenn Maxwell.
Considered deadly for his prodigal cricketing talent, Kohli has been a consistent performer on the cricket field. His connect with fans seems to be as consistent as his batting - a fact that has also made him the fifth most marketable athlete in the world!
According to UK-based magazine -SportsPro, Kohli is more marketable than Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi and three-time F1 champion Sebastian Vettel.

IPL 7: Knights take on Kings at Eden as playoffs commence

NEI INDIA via Daily.Bhaskar Kolkata: Riding an incredible winning wave that has seen them washing seven games on the trot with their sheer resilience, 2012 champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are all set to give table toppers Kings XI Punjab a more than decent run for their money as the two top sides of the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) lock horns at the iconic Eden Gardens here on Tuesday. While Kings have appeared favourites to go all the way right from their first game, KKR has overcome an indifferent start to hop on to an enviable streak that has looked good enough to earn them their second IPL crown in three years.
While skipper Gautam Gambhir has endured the ignominy of a hat-trick of ducks, in Robin Uthappa, KKR seems to have woken up a soporific run machine. His phlegmatic demeanour and listless eyes have betrayed the sheer will and ability to do well, and Uthappa, realising a possible vacuum in Indian top order, has staked a substantial claim for return in Indian colours.
As far as Kings are concerned, they have rarely put a foot wrong in this IPL. Having consistently hovered in top two positions, Kings have a lot to thank to Glenn Maxwell and David Miller. In Virender Sehwag and Manan Vohra, they have two brutal batsmen who have been farely consistent, and in Mitchell Johnson, they boast of perhaps the only fast bowler in IPL 7 who is capable of running through the opposition. While KKR would be buoyed by the return to form of Yusuf Pathan, he will be challenged by Johnson’s sheer pace and canny left-am spin of Akshar Patel.
Kings would like Glenn Maxwell to return to top form at the earliest. The Aussie right-hander, after setting the IPL 7 ablaze, has gone quiet in last three games. On Tuesday, he will be up against the searing pace of Morne Morkel and the inscrutable guile of Sunil Narine. Both sides are adept at chasing; Kings have chased successfully on all six occasions they were asked to bat second this IPL, while KKR have won last six of their run chases. In terms of momentum, KKR have a slight advantage, however, all that will come to nought when Gautam Gambhir and George Bailey walk out for toss this evening.
